How much the SEAI electric vehicle grant pays
SEAI states the private grant for a new electric passenger car is 3,500 euro, within its price limits. Revenue's VRT relief is a separate measure.
The grant
SEAI's grant page states that the maximum grant for a qualifying new passenger car bought privately is 3,500 euro. The scheme guidelines refer to new electric vehicles registered for the first time in Ireland.
Price limits
A vehicle with a full price of more than 50,000 euro or less than 15,000 euro receives no grant on SEAI's grant page; the guidelines set the passenger-car cap at 50,000 euro from 1 August 2026 and exclude a car priced at 15,000 euro or less.
VRT relief, a separate tax measure
Revenue states that series-production passenger cars and commercial vehicles (VRT categories A and B) powered only by an electric motor and registered before 31 December 2026 are eligible for relief from Vehicle Registration Tax up to a maximum of 5,000 euro. It says a vehicle with an open market selling price (OMSP) of up to 40,000 euro is granted relief of up to 5,000 euro, a vehicle with an OMSP above 40,000 euro and below 50,000 euro receives a reduced level of relief, and the relief has been removed for electric vehicles above 50,000 euro.
The closed scrappage pilot
While it was open, the ICE2EV pilot paid 5,000 euro of scrappage on top of the 3,500 euro grant, 8,500 euro in total, for scrapping a petrol or diesel car registered in 2013 or earlier when buying a new electric vehicle, from a budget of 10 million euro. SEAI states that it is closed.
