Who qualifies for the SEAI electric vehicle grant
The private tier covers a new electric passenger car, first registered in Ireland, bought by a private individual for private use, within SEAI's price limits.
Private buyers
The guidelines define a private purchase as the purchase of a passenger car (category M1) by a private individual for private use only.
Which vehicles
The scheme covers new electric vehicles registered for the first time in Ireland. SEAI states that its grants are not available for used electric vehicles.
Price window
SEAI's grant page says a vehicle with a full price of more than 50,000 euro or less than 15,000 euro receives no grant. The guidelines set the passenger-car price cap at 50,000 euro from 1 August 2026 and say a passenger car priced at 15,000 euro or less is not eligible. The sources differ on whether a price of exactly 15,000 euro qualifies.
Keeping the car private
For an approved private application the vehicle must be registered and taxed as private and remain registered as private for six months after the date of the grant offer.
